Every shop knows its daily total. It's on the till, the billing app and the owner's mind at closing time. But a total only tells you what happened. It doesn't tell you why, or what to do next.
Good sales tracking answers a few more useful questions.
Five questions worth answering every month
1. How much came from returning customers?
Split your sales into new and returning customers. If most of your revenue comes from people who have bought before, which is common, then keeping those customers is your biggest growth lever.
2. How long do customers take to come back?
The average time between visits tells you when to get in touch. If customers typically return after eight months, a message at month seven is perfectly timed.
3. Which customers are going quiet?
A customer who used to visit every few months and hasn't come in for a year is at risk. A list of these customers is a list of easy wins.
4. What sells together?
Notice what people buy alongside their main purchase, such as straps with watches, cases with phones or cleaning kits with glasses. That is your next offer.
5. Did your messages lead to sales?
This is the one most shops never measure. If you send a campaign, did the customers who received it buy more in the following weeks?
Measuring revenue after campaigns
WatchSense connects the two sides: the messages you send and the sales you record. When a customer buys within a set window after receiving a campaign message, that sale is counted as revenue after the campaign.
It is an honest measure. It shows what followed a message, not proof that the message caused it. Even so, it quickly shows which campaigns are worth repeating and which to drop.
Keep reports simple
A report you don't read is useless. Aim for:
- One page, checked weekly. Total sales, repeat customers and messages sent.
- One deeper look, monthly. Quiet customers, time between visits and campaign results.
- Exports when you need them. A weekly or monthly spreadsheet for your accountant or partners.
From numbers to action
Every insight should lead to a decision:
| You notice | You do |
|---|---|
| Many quiet customers | Send a friendly win-back message |
| Short time between visits | Launch a loyalty reward |
| A campaign with strong results | Repeat it next season |
| A campaign with no results | Change the message or the audience |
Track a few things well, act on them, and your sales numbers start telling you what to do next.
