Smart campaign management: send the right message to the right customer

The easiest campaign in the world is "send this offer to everyone". It's also the least effective. Customers who just bought get an offer they can't use, customers who never buy that category ignore it, and some decide to stop listening to you altogether.
Smart campaigns do the opposite. They use what you already know about each customer to decide who hears what, and when.
Start with groups, not offers
Before writing a message, decide who it is for. Useful groups for most shops:
- New customers who bought in the last 30 days
- Regulars with three or more purchases
- Quiet customers with no visit in 6+ months
- By category or brand purchased
- By special date, with birthdays or anniversaries this month
In WatchSense these come from the details you already record, so groups update themselves as customers buy.
Types of campaigns that work
| Campaign | Who it's for | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Welcome | New customers | "Thanks for choosing us. Here's how to care for your purchase." |
| Reminder | Customers with a service or renewal due | "Your yearly service is due next week." |
| Celebration | Birthdays and anniversaries | "Happy birthday! A small gift is waiting for you." |
| Festival | Customers likely to buy gifts | "Diwali gifts for the whole family, now in store." |
| Win-back | Quiet customers | "We miss you. Here's something special for your next visit." |
Timing is half the message
- Event-based beats calendar-based. A message triggered by a customer's own date is more relevant than a blast on the 1st of the month.
- Plan festivals early. Start gift campaigns two to three weeks before the festival, not the day before.
- Space your messages. Make sure one customer doesn't get three campaigns in the same week.
Keep messages short and personal
- Use the customer's name and refer to what they bought.
- One message, one idea, one clear next step.
- Sign it from your shop, not from "Team Marketing".
- Add a picture only when it helps, such as a product or an offer card.
Measure and adjust
After each campaign, check three things: how many customers received it, how many replied or visited, and the revenue that followed. Keep the campaigns that work, rewrite the ones that don't, and stop the ones nobody responds to.
Set it and let it run
The most valuable campaigns, such as welcome, reminder and celebration, don't need to be sent by hand at all. Set them up once and they run for every customer who qualifies, all year long. That leaves your time for the seasonal campaigns that need a personal touch.
