WhatsApp marketing automation for shops: a practical guide

For most customers in India, WhatsApp is the first app they open in the morning and the last one they check at night. Messages there get read, often within minutes. That makes it the most powerful channel a shop has. It also makes it the easiest one to misuse.
Done well, WhatsApp automation feels like a helpful shopkeeper who remembers you. Done badly, it feels like spam.
Personal WhatsApp vs. the Business Platform
Many shops start by messaging customers from a personal phone or the WhatsApp Business app. That works for a handful of chats, but it doesn't scale:
- you can't schedule or automate messages
- sending the same text to hundreds of people risks your number being blocked
- there's no record of who received what
The WhatsApp Business Platform (the official API) is built for this. Messages go out from your verified business number, using pre-approved templates, and can be fully automated. WatchSense connects to it for you.
What are message templates?
WhatsApp requires business-started messages to use templates it has approved. A template is a message with blanks for personal details, for example:
Hi {{name}}, your {{product}} is due for its yearly service. Visit us any time this month for a free check.
Templates fall into categories such as utility (reminders, updates and receipts) and marketing (offers and promotions). Utility messages are generally cheaper and are the backbone of good automation.
Messages worth automating
- Service and replacement reminders: helpful, expected and highly read.
- Order and repair updates: "Your watch is ready for pickup."
- Warranty alerts before the warranty ends.
- Birthday and anniversary wishes, optionally with a small offer.
- Review requests a day after a purchase.
- Seasonal offers to customers who opted in to marketing.
Rules that protect your number
- Get consent. Only message customers who agreed to hear from you, and record it.
- Honour STOP immediately. WatchSense stops all further messages when a customer opts out.
- Keep quality high. If many people block or report you, WhatsApp limits your number.
- Don't over-send. A few relevant messages a month beats daily promotions.
Measuring results
Track how many messages were delivered and read, how many customers replied, and the sales that followed. Read rates on WhatsApp are typically far higher than on email, but the real measure is whether customers come back.
Getting started
- Connect your business number to the WhatsApp Business Platform.
- Create two or three utility templates for your most common reminders.
- Switch on one automation and send it to a small group first.
- Review the replies, refine the message, then roll it out to everyone.
WhatsApp works best when every message is one your customer would be glad to get. Automate the helpful ones first, and the offers will be welcome too.
